As we are in Reformation Month, we want to share one of our favorite Protestant Reformation stories. We have told this story many times, and, during our church’s Reformation Night, the coloring sheet we are offering as a free printable for those who subscribe has become a favorite among the kids, all because this certain reformer is holding a piece of meat!

To hear the story of Ulrich Zwingli and what sausages had to do with it all, listen to our brand new As Told By Littles Podcast Theater “Zwingli and the Sausage Supper” here.

“To sum up briefly: if you want to fast, do so; if you do not want to eat meat, don’t eat it; but allow Christians a free choice….If you would be a Christian at heart, act in this way.”

Update # 3: New Projects

As we walked away from RB Net GA and the G3 Conference, so were greatly encouraged by all the men, women, and kids who enjoy our films, podcast, and other resources. Let us repeat: GREATLY ENCOURAGED. With that said, there is the reality of our desire to do SO MUCH more! We have no shortage of ideas – we have a book in the works, more ideas for films, possible specials for TV, we want to produce podcasts more often, and we have a VBS curriculum in the works as well.

So, back to reality— we greatly need YOUR support to complete these projects. While we are non-profit, all these projects are not free, and we have to pay fees and dues to stay a non-profit business. So, will you pray and consider partnering with us to help us spread the gospel through church history?

“Deny the world, defy the devil, despise the flesh, and delight yourself only in the Lord.”

-Lady Jane Grey

As we are thinking about what media we allow our kids consume, as well as ourselves, in this world, it is sobering to look at those in the past.  Lady Jane Grey was one who stood boldly for her faith as a young person, even in the face of death.

Jane’s cousin, Queen Mary (AKA Bloody Mary) was willing to pardon Jane of death if she embraced the Church of Rome.  Queen Mary sent a man to try to convince her of the Catholic faith, but she clung to scripture, knowing that meant death.

Confessions in the Face of Death

Let’s take a look at her last words before she was put to death:

“I pray you all, good Christian people, to bear me witness that I die a true Christian woman, and that I do look to be saved by no other mean, but only by the mercy of God, in the blood of his only Son Jesus Christ: and I confess, that when I did know the word of God, I neglected the same, loved myself and the world; and therefore this plague and punishment is happily and worthily happened unto me for my sins; and yet I thank God, that of his goodness he hath thus given me a time and respite to repent. And now, good people, while I am alive, I pray you assist me with your prayers.”

Lady Jane confesses that when she knew the Word of God, she neglected it, and “Loved myself and the world,” and even goes on to suggest that is why she was worthy of the punishment.  And yet, she thanked God for the time in prison for “respite to repent.”

She had a great temptation to deny her faith in order to continue to live her earthly life.  Instead, by God’s grace, she gripped what she knew to be true.  Her eyes were no longer focused on the world, but on her Savior and eternal life.

Loving Ourselves and the World through Media Consumption

We face many temptations each day.  Now, most of these temptations are not so bold as to ask us to deny our faith, but perhaps to chip away at it.  Instead of full-out “denying our faith,” giving into these temptations cause us to neglect the Word of God, and as Lady Jane put it, to love ourselves and the world.  We become desensitized to language, sex, violence, drugs, pride, and more in our own homes.  We welcome the world and it’s wretchedness in our own living room or wherever there is a screen.

Do All to the Glory of God— Even with Media Consumption

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31, ESV

Let us pray for time for “respite to repent” and for wisdom in what we welcome into our homes.  Our kids easily soak in what they see, whether it’s wisdom or wretchedness.  Let us use this precious time that our kids are in our homes to let them see, above all else, that whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, we can do all to the glory of God. Despite the temptations flying at as from all directions, let us seek to glorify God, even with what we bring into our homes through media. Let us despise the flesh and delight only in the Lord— for he is good!

Suggestions on How to Guide Your Kids in “Despising the Flesh and Delighting Only in the Lord”

-Keep reading scripture that can help your kids make those decisions. If they know what the Word of God says, they have the best tool.

-We recently discovered a service called Clear Play. This resource has a wide variety of movies available in which you can filter out all the filth. View that site here.

-You can make your own playlists of music for your kids to listen to— pre-approved by you.

-Use filters. Many apps have filters. Be diligent to use them.

-You can put your computers in the middle of the busiest part of your house. This way the screen can be seen. Allow kids to use tablets only where the screen can be seen.

-Do not allow your kids to be alone with other kids who have a tablet, computer, or smart phone.

-Keep the conversation open. Keep talking to your kids about what is out there in the world. Discuss why you do or do not allow certain things into your home. Back it up with scripture and bring it back to the gospel!

-Use other Christian parents as a resource. Not sure about a certain musician or book series your kids want to listen to or read? Ask a trusted Christian friend, perhaps one with slightly older kids or kids of similar age.

-Encourage your kids to “redeem the time” by setting time limits on screens, and help them be aware of how much time the particular media they want to consume takes up (see our post: https://fivesolasmedia.com/redeeming-the-time-in-a-world-full-of-media-that-steals-it/ )

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16 (NKJV)

In both of these translations, we see how Paul explains to the Ephesians that because Christ has saved them, they need to be careful in how they walk— how they go about their lives— making the best use of their time. That’s the idea behind his phrase “redeeming the time.”

The days are full of things that steal our time.  They are full of things they steal are attention away from our Savior.  And even as sinners saved by grace, our flesh is bent towards giving into those things.

So, Paul warns us.  He warns us of how easy it is to waste time.

I recently came across some data shared by @christ.is.the.cure that was shocking to read. It takes 79 hours to read through the Harry Potter series, but only 57 hours to read through the entire Bible.

This struck a chord with me.  It was a reminder to me how easy it is to spend time on other things besides the Bible.  It takes no effort at all to forget to spend time in the Word and prayer.  But despite the effort, we easily take up books or TV series that consumer hours of our precious life.

In media consumption, content isn’t the only thing to consider.

When we look at teaching our kids how to redeem their time, we need to apply Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians to what we allow them to consume.  Content aside, are what are kids consuming on YouTube, in books, through steaming services, video games, music, etc. eating up too much time?

For example, the world of the Japanese graphic novels called “Mangas” was just opened up to me as a parent.  I was attempting to check out the content of some the Mangas that were going around in my kids’ circles and discovered that there are 101 graphic volumes to a particular series!

Note: Mangas are like comic books, but a lot thicker, with each chapter of the graphic novel being about the length of a comic book.

The certain series I was looking at was clean-ish with no language or sexual content, but slightly violent (although nothing like a lot of comic books out there). So, it could be easy to let the kids read because the content wasn’t bad. But here’s the kicker. The very nature of how each book ends is a cliff-hanger, making the reader want more.  And with 101 graphic novels, with four published per year, much time can be consumed!  This is only one series. And as you can imagine, there are too many Manga series to count.

It’s too easy for ALL of us.

So, I was once again reminded of how easy it is to be consumed.  As easy as it is for me to binge watch When Calls the Heart (don’t judge me— only when I was sick!) or mindlessly scroll through my social media feed, it is just as easy for my kids to consume different types of media, even if they aren’t in front of a screen.

All this media is made for us to want more.  To consume more.  I’m not saying that we can’t enjoy good, clean media, but in addition to content, we must be aware of our time.  WE only have a certain amount of life given to us by the Lord. How will we use it to bring him glory?

Oh, the struggle!

It is SO easy to do other things.  The days are evil, indeed.  Let’s take up and read the Bible!  Let us make time for personal and family devotions or worship time.  Let’s use time to build relationships.  Let us use time to create or work for the glory of God.

May our children witness us redeeming our time with things that bring God glory, and may God give us the wisdom and strength to guide our kids in how they use their time.

Let’s put down the smart phones, the laptops, and the game controllers.  Let us redeem the time. And may we, along with our kids, “Taste and see that the LORD is good!” (Psalm 34:1)

We wish we could give you a helpful checklist of what to watch or listen to. But honestly, it would be impossible to list all the music, movies, TV shows, books, etc. that are safe for our kids.  But there is hope! Scripture Alone can guide us and it can be a lens to help us lead our kids in how we should engage with the culture of the day.

One thing is sure:  There is an unpresented amount of music, YouTube videos, streaming services, and books that are blatantly against God and His Word today.  Media is one of the big ways that the devil whispers lies to a society ready to believe them.

Philippians 4:8 can be a helpful guide to filter through the lies and agenda of the enemy in media today.

What questions can we ask about our kids’ media?

Are you wondering about a certain artist being safe for your kids to listen to? Are the lyrics true or are they written to lead others from the truth? Are the lyrics pure or are they explicit? Is the artist honorable or have they stood for questionable things just to win the hearts of society?

Have you wondered about a book or book series your kids want to read? In God’s eyes, is it worthy of praise? Are there lessons learned in the book that are helpful or beneficial to the soul?

Do you find yourself questioning the YouTube accounts your kids want to follow? Is it excellent?  Does it bring God glory, not only in quality, but in content, or purpose? Does it redeem the time that is used watching it?

If we fill our heads with things that are against God, how can we think on the things that are lovely, pure, and bring God glory? The truth is, we can’t.  And neither can our kids.

We must guide our kids through this world with scripture. That is the standard.

It isn’t easy.  As parents, there is so much for us to sort through and there is so much junk offered freely in this world! But, our attention to the things that fill our kids’ heads is not in vain! Be encouraged and look to Christ! May Christ be everything we yearn for, and may our kids see that in us!

Let’s take seriously the words God has given us. May we seek to apply them to our lives the best we can. And may our kids see the light of Christ in us that is contrary to the darkness of the world we live in! Our desire is that our kids would taste and see that the Lord is good.

*Philippians 4:8 is just one example of how we can apply scripture to the decisions we make daily.  There are more scriptures and we will be posting them this week, so be on the lookout!
